Moore Park is a large area of parkland in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Moore Park is located 3 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district and is part of local government area of the City of Sydney. Moore Park is adjacent to another larger area of parkland, Centennial Park, to its east. Moore Park is also a small suburb, in its own right, as is Centennial Park.

History

The parkland south of Paddington was named after Charles Moore, Mayor of Sydney from 1867-69, who fought for the land to be dedicated as a leisure area for the people of Sydney and suburbs. The land was part of 1,000 acres (4.0 km²) originally set aside by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810 for grazing and watering stock.

Sydney’s first zoo was established here in 1879 on 7 acres of land known as Billygoat Swamp. The zoological gardens covered 15 acres by 1906 but moved to Bradley’s Head at the site now known as Taronga in 1917. It was replaced by Sydney Girls High School which opened on this site in 1920. Students transferred from Elizabeth Street, which became the site of the David Jones Department Store. Sydney Boys High School opened in 1928 on the remaining zoo land.

Commercial Area

Moore Park is the former location of the Royal Agricultural Society’s Sydney Showground, which hosted the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show until 1998. It moved to Homebush bay (the site of the 2000 Olympic Games). The old showgrounds have since been redeveloped as Fox Studios, a commercial venture designed at supporting Australia's film industry. The Entertainment Quarter is a retail, dining and entertainment precinct beside the studios. It contains cinemas, live venues, restaurants, cafes, pubs, and retailers of fashion and homewares. The Farmer’s Market operates every Wednesday and Saturday in the old showground show ring.

The south-western corner of the suburb boasts a large shopping centre called the 'Moore Park Supa Centre', on South Dowling Street. It specialises in showrooms for home furnishings and home renovations. This was the site of the former Dowling Street tram depot.
